Both. Attraction triggers dopamine (reward) and norepinephrine (focus), creating early-stage chemistry. But sustained bonding requires oxytocin (trust) and lower dopamine, which depend on behavior—how your partner treats you, whether they're reliable. Chemistry fades; compatible behavior sustains love.

Can chemistry last forever?

The early-stage neurochemistry (that obsessive phase) typically lasts 1-3 years, then shifts. What people call "losing chemistry" is actually this biological shift. But deep attachment chemistry (oxytocin-based bonding) can strengthen for decades. They're different types of chemistry with different timelines.

What if we have chemistry but no compatibility?

Chemistry alone is intoxicating but unsustainable. After the dopamine phase wears off (usually by year 2), if you're fundamentally incompatible, the relationship struggles. Chemistry is the spark; compatibility is the fuel. You need both.
