Holland Code Personality Framework

The 6 RIASEC Types

Developed by psychologist John Holland, RIASEC is the world's most widely used career personality framework. Each of the six types represents a distinct combination of work preferences, skills, and environments. Most people are a blend of two or three types — and your combination points directly to your ideal career path.

What is RIASEC?

RIASEC — also called Holland Codes — is a theory of careers and vocational choice developed by psychologist John L. Holland in the 1950s and 1960s. Holland proposed that both people and work environments can be classified into six personality types, and that career satisfaction arises when there is a strong match between person and environment.

The six types form a hexagon in Holland's model, with adjacent types being most similar and opposite types being most different. A Realistic type and a Social type, for example, are on opposite ends of the hexagon — very different in their preferences and strengths.

Most career assessments — including those used by the US Department of Labor's O*NET system — are built on RIASEC theory. Your Holland Code is typically expressed as a three-letter combination (e.g., RIA, ESA, or CSE), with the first letter representing your strongest type.

RIASEC is one of the most empirically validated career frameworks in psychology, with decades of research confirming its predictive validity for job satisfaction, performance, and career longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 6 RIASEC Holland Code types?

The 6 RIASEC Holland Code types are: Realistic (R) — The Builder, practical and hands-on; Investigative (I) — The Thinker, analytical and curious; Artistic (A) — The Creator, expressive and imaginative; Social (S) — The Helper, empathetic and people-focused; Enterprising (E) — The Persuader, ambitious and leadership-driven; Conventional (C) — The Organizer, precise and structured.

How do RIASEC Holland Codes work for career planning?

RIASEC Holland Codes match personality types to work environments and careers. Most people have a primary type and one or two secondary types (e.g., RIA or ESC). The best career fit occurs when your top two or three codes align with the demands of the job role and work environment. Taking a validated RIASEC assessment gives you a personalized three-letter code profile.

Which RIASEC type is most common?

The Social (S) type is generally considered the most common RIASEC category, representing approximately 20-25% of the population. Realistic (R) and Conventional (C) types are also common at 15-20% each. The Artistic (A) type is typically the rarest at around 5-10% of the population.

Can I have more than one RIASEC Holland Code type?

Yes — and most people do. RIASEC theory assigns each person a three-letter code representing their top three types in order of strength (e.g., "RIC" or "SAE"). The combination of types creates a more nuanced career profile than any single letter alone.

How is RIASEC different from MBTI or Big Five?

RIASEC (Holland Codes) is specifically designed for career matching and vocational guidance, focusing on work preferences and environments. MBTI measures cognitive and social personality style, while Big Five measures five broad personality dimensions. RIASEC is often considered the most directly actionable for career planning because it was built specifically for that purpose.
