Person-Environment Fit
The degree of match between a person's personality, values, and interests and their work environment. Higher fit predicts greater job satisfaction, performance, and retention.
Person-Environment (P-E) Fit theory is the scientific foundation behind career personality testing. It proposes that people are most satisfied and productive when their characteristics match their environment's demands and rewards.
Holland's RIASEC model is the most established P-E fit framework: if you're an Artistic-Investigative type working in a Conventional-Realistic environment, you'll experience friction. Meta-analyses show congruence predicts job satisfaction (r=0.28), job performance (r=0.20), and reduced turnover intention (r=0.15).
P-E fit operates at multiple levels: Person-Job fit (do your skills match task demands?), Person-Organization fit (do your values match company culture?), Person-Group fit (do you work well with your team?), and Person-Vocation fit (does your career match your interests?). Career assessments address primarily Person-Vocation fit.
