מהו Sternberg Love Triangle?

Robert Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love, introduced in 1986, is one of the most cited models in relationship psychology. It proposes that love is composed of three components: Intimacy (emotional closeness and connection), Passion (romantic attraction and physical desire), and Commitment (the decision to maintain the relationship long-term).

Different combinations of these three components produce distinct relationship types: Consummate Love (all three present) is considered the ideal; Romantic Love (intimacy + passion, no commitment); Companionate Love (intimacy + commitment, no passion); Fatuous Love (passion + commitment, no intimacy); and others. Understanding your triangle reveals the current balance, and what your relationship needs.

JobCannon's 15-question assessment measures your levels of all three components, maps them to Sternberg's taxonomy, and provides insights into your relationship's strengths, vulnerabilities, and growth opportunities.

Practical strategies to strengthen each dimension of your relationship
  • Intimacy is the feeling of closeness, connectedness, and emotional support. Passion is the drive of romance, physical attraction, and sexual desire. Commitment is the decision to love someone and maintain the relationship. Different combinations of these three create eight distinct love types.

  • Consummate Love, all three components present at high levels, is what many consider the complete or ideal form of love. Sternberg acknowledged it is difficult to achieve and even harder to maintain, as passion naturally diminishes over time without active nurturing.

  • Yes. You can reflect on a past relationship, an ideal relationship, or answer based on how you generally approach romantic relationships. The results are insightful for understanding your relational patterns regardless of your current status.

  • The Triangular Theory has substantial empirical support. Sternberg's own Triangular Love Scale (used as the basis for this assessment) demonstrates good reliability and has been validated across diverse cultures and relationship types.

  • Eight. Sternberg's model combines the presence or absence of intimacy, passion, and commitment into seven kinds of love (Liking, Infatuation, Empty, Romantic, Companionate, Fatuous, and Consummate) plus Non-love when all three are low. The point is not to land a 'good' or 'bad' label but to see which components are currently carrying your relationship.

  • Yes — this is a snapshot, not a fixed verdict. Sternberg's own work describes passion as often peaking early and then settling, while intimacy and commitment tend to build more slowly. A couple can move through several types over the years, so a result is best read as 'where we are now', not 'what we are'.

  • No. This is a 15-question self-reflection adapted from Sternberg's three-component model, not the verbatim academic Triangular Love Scale used in published studies. It is built for personal insight and conversation, not as a clinical or diagnostic measure of a relationship's health.
