End-to-End Encryption E2E이란

End-to-end encryption (E2E) ensures that only the sender and recipient can read messages. The service provider (WhatsApp, Signal, etc.) cannot read messages even if they wanted to. It's built on asymmetric cryptography (public/private keys) and forward secrecy (keys rotate after each message). When you send a message, it's encrypted on your device with the recipient's public key. The server stores it encrypted. The recipient receives it and decrypts with their private key. The server never sees the decryption key.

How does E2E work if both parties need a shared key?

E2E uses asymmetric encryption: each user has a public key (shared) and private key (secret). Sender encrypts with recipient's public key; only recipient's private key can decrypt. Additionally, E2E uses the Signal Protocol for forward secrecy: keys are used once and discarded. Compromising a key doesn't decrypt past or future messages.

Isn't E2E slow? Doesn't asymmetric encryption have high overhead?

Hybrid encryption solves this. Asymmetric encryption is used only to exchange a symmetric key. Actual message content is encrypted with the faster symmetric key. Result: security of asymmetric + speed of symmetric.

What's the difference between E2E and regular HTTPS?

HTTPS encrypts in transit (client-to-server). Server has the key and can read messages. E2E means the server can't read messages, only client and recipient can. E2E is stronger privacy but more complex (key management, backup, device sync).

How do you back up E2E encrypted messages?

Tension: backup requires storing the backup key somewhere. Options: (1) user-managed backup key (users responsible for keeping it safe), (2) recovery codes (printed phrases, user stores offline), (3) cloud backup with user's password (not true E2E). No perfect solution.

What about law enforcement access?

This is the policy battleground. Law enforcement wants backdoors to read messages (court orders, criminal investigations). Privacy advocates say backdoors weaken security for everyone. Most democratic countries are debating regulations. Engineers must understand the policy landscape.
