Goals are broad directions ('improve customer satisfaction'). OKRs are specific and measurable ('Objective: improve customer satisfaction; Key Results: increase NPS 10 points, reduce support tickets 20%, launch 2 new features'). OKRs are more structured.
How many goals should a person have?
3-5 goals per quarter. More than 5 = scattered focus. One per role/responsibility. Example: engineer has goal for feature delivery, technical debt, and one-on-one mentoring.
How do I set achievable goals?
Historical data: what did you accomplish last quarter? Set goal slightly higher (80/20 rule: 80% likely to achieve, 20% stretch). Not so high it's impossible.
Should goals be public or private?
Public goals increase accountability and enable collaboration. Private goals hide progress. Default to public. Exception: goals that reveal strategy or competitive info.
What if circumstances change mid-quarter?
Goals should flex slightly with changing circumstances. Reprioritize or adjust target (from +15% to +10% if market shift). But don't abandon goals frivolously.
