Why use Thanos instead of keeping Prometheus data longer?
Prometheus stores data locally on disk; scaling is expensive (need large disks). Thanos uploads compressed blocks to S3, keeping recent data in Prometheus and archiving to cheap object storage. Cost is 10x lower.
How does Thanos query work?
Thanos Query (sidecar) is a distributed querying layer. It queries local Prometheus and object storage seamlessly. You query Thanos once; it assembles results from all sources.
Can I query data from months ago?
Yes. With Thanos, query any time range. Recent data comes from Prometheus cache; older data from object storage. Queries are slower for old data but cost is minimal.
How do I migrate existing Prometheus to Thanos?
Run Thanos Sidecar next to Prometheus. It uploads blocks to object storage. No downtime. Thanos Query abstracts the source (Prometheus or object storage).
Does Thanos add query latency?
