ECS: simpler, AWS-native, less overhead. EKS: standard Kubernetes, multi-cloud, larger community. Use ECS if you're AWS-only; EKS if you want portability.
What's the difference between EC2 launch type and Fargate?
EC2: you manage EC2 instances, ECS schedules containers on them. Fargate: serverless, AWS manages infrastructure, you pay per container. Fargate simpler, EC2 cheaper at scale.
How do I deploy updates without downtime?
Use rolling deployments (ECS default). ECS terminates old task, starts new task, checks health, repeats. Combined with ALB health checks = zero downtime.
Can I use ECS for databases?
Technically yes, but not recommended. ECS is stateless. For stateful services (databases), use RDS or DynamoDB.
How do I scale ECS services?
Target tracking scaling. Example: scale out when CPU >70%, scale in when <30%. ECS Auto Scaling manages it automatically.
Can I use private Docker registries with ECS?
Yes, ECR (AWS Docker registry), Docker Hub, Quay. ECS supports all. Credentials stored in Secrets Manager.
Is ECS suitable for production?
Yes, millions of containers run on ECS. Caveats: Fargate has some limitations (no GPU, limited network options); EC2 requires ops skill.
