Cross-chain token bridges are protocols that move tokens between blockchains. When you want to move 10 BTC from Bitcoin to Ethereum, the bridge locks those 10 BTC on Bitcoin, mints 10 wBTC on Ethereum, and sends it to you. When you want to move wBTC back to BTC, you burn wBTC on Ethereum, unlock BTC on Bitcoin. What's the difference between wrapped and canonical tokens?
Canonical: original token on its native chain (BTC on Bitcoin, ETH on Ethereum). Wrapped: representation of the canonical token on another chain (wBTC on Ethereum = 1 BTC locked on Bitcoin, represented as wBTC). Wrapped tokens always have less liquidity and a counterparty risk (the bridge could fail).
How do you ensure wrapped tokens trade at parity with canonical tokens?
Arbitrage. If wBTC trades below 1 BTC worth of ETH, arbitrageurs can: buy wBTC cheap on Ethereum, bridge it back to Bitcoin (unwrap), sell BTC for ETH on Uniswap, keep the profit. Their competition drives wBTC price back to parity. Without arbitrage incentives, wrapped tokens can drift 1-5% from canonical value.
What causes wrapped token depeg?
Bridge failure (can't unwrap), liquidity crisis (no buyers at fair price), or panic (users fear bridge failure, dump wrapped tokens). Example: Wormhole hack, wETH bridged from Solana depegged. Solution: deep liquidity pools, bridge insurance, and clear communication about bridge health.
How do you design a wrapped token contract?
