I korthet

A crypto wallet manages private keys (secret passwords) and enables signing transactions (approving sends). Hot wallets (connected to internet) are convenient but risky. Cold wallets (offline) are secure but slow. Wallet engineering requires: cryptography (ECDSA, EdDSA), secure key storage (HSM, MPC), transaction signing, multi-sig, and recovery. Mastery takes 6-9 months. Senior wallet engineers earn $300-450k because they secure billions in assets. Becoming one of the 1% of engineers who can design theft-proof wallets is a career-defining advantage.

Vad är Crypto Wallet Engineering

A crypto wallet is software or hardware that manages private keys (cryptographic secrets) and enables signing transactions (approving transfers of coins). When you send Bitcoin, the wallet signs with your private key to prove you own those coins. Wallet types: custodial (Coinbase holds your keys), non-custodial (you hold your keys), hardware (offline device), hot (connected to internet), cold (offline storage). Each has tradeoffs: convenience vs security.

❓ Vanliga frågor

What's the difference between a custodial and non-custodial wallet?
Custodial: a service (Coinbase) holds your keys. You trust them not to steal. Non-custodial: you hold your own keys (MetaMask). More control but you can lose them. Custodial = easier, higher risk. Non-custodial = harder, lower risk. Both have use cases.
What's a hardware wallet and why is it safer?
Hardware wallet: a device (Ledger, Trezor) that stores keys offline. Transaction signing happens on the device (never exposed to internet). Even if your computer is hacked, keys are safe. Trade-off: slower, need physical device.
How do you implement multi-sig safely?
Multi-sig: 2-of-3, 3-of-5 (any m-of-n) signatures required to approve a transaction. If any signer is compromised, transaction still can't be approved. Requires distributing keys securely (different cities, different people). Trade-off: slower, more complex.
What's Multi-Party Computation and how is it used in wallets?
MPC: split a key into shares. No single share reveals the key. To sign, m-of-n parties combine their shares (computation happens distributed, key never fully exposed). Eliminates single point of failure. Slower than single-sig but more secure.
How do you securely store recovery phrases?
Recovery phrase (seed): 12-24 words that regenerate private keys. Store in: metal stamped (survives fires), divided across locations (2-of-3 copies in different cities), never digital. Lose the phrase = lose the wallet (irreversible).
What's the difference between ECDSA and EdDSA?
ECDSA: older standard, requires random number generator (weak RNG = compromised keys). EdDSA: newer, doesn't need randomness (safer). Most new wallets use EdDSA. But Bitcoin and Ethereum use ECDSA (hard to change). Know both.
How do you prevent wallet address reuse?
Address reuse: using same address for multiple transactions (reduces privacy). Solution: Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets (BIP-32). Master key generates infinite child keys. Each transaction uses new address. Safer and more private.
