I korthet

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions (yours and others') to drive better outcomes. High-EQ leaders navigate conflicts gracefully, build trust, motivate teams, and adapt to change. Time to competency: 6-8 weeks for deliberate practice.

Vad är Emotional Intelligence EQ

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions, your own and others'. It comprises four domains: self-awareness (knowing your emotions and impact), self-management (regulating emotions), social awareness (reading others), and relationship management (influencing and inspiring). High-EQ leaders don't blow up in frustration. They pause, reflect, and respond thoughtfully. They notice when a team member is disengaged, ask clarifying questions, and find the root cause. They give hard feedback without destroying confidence. They navigate office politics without compromising values.

❓ Vanliga frågor

Is EQ the same as being nice?
No. EQ is emotional awareness + intentional response. Nice is passive compliance. High-EQ people can be direct, disagree respectfully, and deliver hard feedback with empathy. Low-EQ people are either passive-aggressive (conflict-avoiding) or aggressive (steamrolling). EQ = neither.
Can EQ be developed, or is it innate?
Mostly developed. Like muscle, EQ grows with practice. Meditation, coaching, journaling, feedback loops all build EQ. Start with self-awareness: notice your triggers, emotional patterns, default reactions. From there, intentionally practice empathy, manage reactions, build rapport.
How does EQ show up in a conflict?
Low EQ: blame, defensiveness, escalation. High EQ: listen to understand, validate feelings, find win-win. High-EQ person asks 'What are they trying to achieve?' not 'Why are they attacking me?' Reframing = resolution.
What's the relationship between EQ and IQ?
Orthogonal. A brilliant engineer (high IQ) can be terrible with people (low EQ) and vice versa. High-performing teams need both.
How do I measure my EQ?
Self-assessment (unreliable, biased). 360-degree feedback (ask peers, direct reports, managers). Assessments (EQ-i, Hogan). Watch your outcomes: do people trust you? Seek your input? Stay on your team? That's EQ in action.
