The question that actually works
Most beginners pull with "what does today hold?" — too vague. The better question is "what do I need to see today?" That phrasing is specific (you, today, attention) and useful regardless of what comes up. If you are facing a specific decision, swap in "what should I pay attention to about [the decision] today?"
The shuffle
Three honest shuffles, then cut. The shuffle is not magic — it is just a randomisation step, and three of them is plenty. Do not over-shuffle searching for "the right moment" to stop; the right moment is when you have shuffled three times.
The first look
Flip the top card. Look at it for thirty seconds before reaching for any book or app. Notice what jumps out at you visually — a colour, a posture, a symbol. Notice your reaction — interest, dread, indifference, recognition. The reaction is data; do not dismiss it.
The interpretation
After the first look, check the card's meaning if you do not already know it. Take what is most useful for today — not all of it. The Three of Pentacles has many meanings (collaboration, craft, recognition); for today, pick the one that lands. You are training pattern-recognition, not memorising.
The one-line journal
Write down the card and one sentence: what you intend to do with this energy today. "Today, the Knight of Wands — I will send the email I have been drafting." That is the whole journal entry. Anyone who tells you to write three paragraphs is overcomplicating it.
The evening glance-back
Before bed, look at what you pulled. Did the day match? Sometimes obviously, sometimes obliquely. Write one more line. Done. Total ritual time, morning + evening: under six minutes.
