Welding and Metal Fabrication
Join metal by fusion — MIG, TIG, stick, codes, penetration, pressure vessels
Welding and Metal Fabrication is joining and building metal structures by melting base metals and adding filler (or pressure-bonding without filler) to create strong, permanent joints. Welders master arc welding (stick, MIG, TIG), gas welding, plasma, and resistance techniques; they read welding symbols on blueprints, inspect penetration and bead quality, and operate robotic welders. Work spans structural steel (buildings, bridges), pressure equipment (boilers, tanks, pipelines), shipbuilding, automotive chassis, and custom fabrication. Career path: Welder (entry, $35-50k) to Lead Welder ($50-70k) to Welding Engineer ($70-110k). Welding is high-demand, recession-resistant, and international (welders travel globally). AWS D1.1 certification (American Welding Society) is widely recognized and opens doors to aerospace and DOT (pressure) work. Code compliance is non-negotiable: a bad weld on a pressure vessel can kill people.
什麼是 Welding and Metal Fabrication
Welding and Metal Fabrication is the craft of fusing metal parts by melting base metals and adding filler, creating strong permanent joints that can withstand load, pressure, and thermal cycles. A welder blends art and engineering: reading blueprints and welding symbols, controlling heat input and travel speed, and producing welds that pass inspection and code. Welding is the process of melting base metals and adding filler material (or pressure-bonding, in some processes) to create a joint. Arc welding (MIG, TIG, stick) is dominant; gas torches, plasma torches, and resistance (spot) welding are also common. A welder reads blueprints, identifies joints and welding symbols, selects the right process and filler metal, positions the work and clamping, establishes an arc, and systematically travels along the joint while controlling travel speed, heat input, and bead geometry. Fabrication is the broader discipline: burning (plasma/oxy-fuel) blanks, bending, shaping, assembling, and welding to build a structure. A fabricator wears multiple hats: torch operator, layout person, tack welder, and finish welder.
