DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is a protocol for streaming video to users at variable quality based on their network speed. Video is encoded at multiple bitrates (500 Kbps, 2 Mbps, 5 Mbps), divided into 10-second segments, and stored on a CDN. A player downloads a metadata file (MPD), measures its network bandwidth, and requests segments at the appropriate quality. If bandwidth drops, player requests lower quality (buffering avoided). If bandwidth improves, player upgrades quality (better experience).

▶What's the difference between DASH and HLS?
DASH: open standard, uses MP4 segments, adaptive via HTTP range requests. HLS: Apple standard, uses MPEG-TS/fMP4 segments. Both adaptive. HLS: mature, simpler. DASH: more flexible, lower latency possible. Most platforms support both (fallback to HLS if DASH unsupported).
▶How does DASH adaptation work?
Player measures bandwidth (how fast is segment download?). Calculates bitrate (500 Kbps = 480p, 2 Mbps = 1080p). Requests next segment at appropriate quality. Too aggressive (high quality, network slow) = buffering. Too conservative = low quality. Algorithms balance tradeoff.
▶What's MPD and why does it matter?

Traditional DASH: 10-30 second latency (10-second segment + 1-2 segments buffered = 20-30 seconds behind live). Low-latency DASH (LL-DASH): 2-8 seconds (shorter segments, chunked encoding). Trade-off: higher latency = more efficient, lower latency = higher overhead.
▶How do you measure quality of experience (QoE)?
Metrics: bitrate (quality), rebuffering events (stops), startup delay (time to first frame), frame rate (smooth vs stuttering). Use tools like Bitmovin Analytics to track real users. Higher bitrate ≠ better QoE (rebuffering is worse than lower quality).
▶What's the difference between progressive and adaptive download?
Progressive: download full video file sequentially (needs storage, long latency). Adaptive: download segments on-demand (low storage, adaptive bitrate). DASH = adaptive download.
