Cloud Storage is Google's object storage service. Upload files (images, videos, backups, datasets) to a bucket. Highly durable (99.999999999%), available globally, and cheap ($0.02/GB/mo). Built on the same infrastructure Google uses for YouTube, Gmail. You interact with buckets and objects (files). Unlike databases, Cloud Storage doesn't have structure (it's not relational). Standard: hot data (accessed frequently). Nearline: warm data (monthly access). Coldline: cold (yearly access). Archive: very cold. Pricing increases with access patterns. Pick based on how often you access. Example: recent logs = Standard, old logs = Archive.

How do I serve Cloud Storage files with a custom domain?

Use Cloud CDN. Route your domain (CNAME) to Cloud Storage bucket via CDN. CDN caches content in edge locations. First user gets from origin (Cloud Storage), subsequent users from edge cache (fast). Setup: bucket > CDN > domain.

Can I restrict access to specific files?

Yes. Use signed URLs (time-limited download links). Or use IAM (bucket-level or object-level access). For public files, make bucket publicly readable. For private, use signed URLs or authenticate requests.

How do I organize a large bucket with millions of files?

Use prefixes (virtual directories, not real). Example: gs://bucket/logs/2024/01/file.txt. Organize by date, type, or customer. No hard limit on files per bucket.

What's the cost of Cloud Storage?

Standard: $0.020/GB/mo (storage) + data transfer costs. Cheaper for frequent access, expensive for rare access but storage is cheaper. Example: 1 TB Standard ~$20/mo + transfer.

Can I automatically delete old files?

Yes. Lifecycle rules: delete objects older than 90 days, or transition to cheaper storage class. Useful for logs, temporary files, backups.
