What's the difference between MQTT and HTTP for IoT?

HTTP is request-response: a device sends a request, server responds. MQTT is pub-sub: a device publishes data; all subscribers receive it. MQTT uses 10-100x less bandwidth and battery because devices don't poll (repeatedly asking 'any data?'). For battery-powered sensors, MQTT is essential.

What's a topic in MQTT?

A topic is a hierarchical string like 'home/kitchen/temperature' or 'factory/line-3/pressure'. Devices publish to topics; other devices subscribe. Topics support wildcards: 'home/+/temperature' listens to all rooms' temperatures. Topics are how MQTT organizes message routing.
