Beneath the headline level of Types and centres, Human Design has a finer texture: 64 gates and 36 channels. This is where the system connects most directly to its oldest source, the Chinese I Ching, whose 64 hexagrams become the 64 gates. Most people never need this level of detail, but understanding it shows how the chart actually gets built — and how a synthesis of ancient systems turns into a single diagram. This article explains gates, channels, and how they create definition.
The 64 Gates and the I Ching
The gates are the smallest unit in Human Design, and there are exactly 64 of them — a number that is not a coincidence. They correspond one-to-one with the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of changes. Ra Uru Hu took each of those 64 figures, assigned it a position around the edges of the BodyGraph, and gave it a specific Human Design theme, while keeping the I Ching numbering. So gate 1 relates to hexagram 1, gate 2 to hexagram 2, and so on, all the way to 64.
Each gate represents a particular quality or theme — a flavour of energy. A gate is "activated" in your chart when one of the planets was positioned over its corresponding slice of the zodiac at your birth (or 88 days before, for the Design side). Your personal collection of activated gates is one of the most detailed layers of your chart, and enthusiasts spend years exploring what each one means. But for most purposes, gates matter chiefly because of what they build: channels.
The 36 Channels
A channel is a connection between two centres, and there are 36 of them in the BodyGraph. Each channel is made of exactly two gates — one sitting on each of the two centres it joins. The channel is the "wire," and the two gates are the plugs at either end. Crucially, a channel only does its work when both of its gates are activated: a single activated gate is a "hanging gate," carrying its theme but not yet completing a connection.
When both gates of a channel are activated, the channel is complete, and that completion is what produces definition. A finished channel defines both of the centres it touches — colours them in — and creates a fixed, reliable circuit of energy running between them. This is the mechanism behind the whole defined/undefined picture: which channels you have completed determines which centres are defined, which in turn sets your Type and your Authority. Channels are where the chart comes alive.
From Gates to Definition
Putting it together, the build order runs upward in scale. Planetary positions activate individual gates. Pairs of activated gates complete channels. Completed channels define centres. The pattern of defined centres yields your Type, your Strategy, your Authority, and your overall design. So a question like "why am I a Generator with Sacral authority?" ultimately traces all the way down to which specific gates the planets happened to activate at your birth and 88 days before.
This is also why two people of the same Type can feel quite different. They may both have a defined Throat, say, but have reached it through different channels and gates, giving each a distinct flavour within the shared Type. The gates-and-channels layer is what makes every chart genuinely individual rather than one of just five templates. To zoom back out to the chart as a whole, see the BodyGraph explained and the nine centers.
A Window Into the Synthesis
Gates and channels are the clearest place to see Human Design as the synthesis it is. The gates are the I Ching's 64 hexagrams; the centres they connect are reworked chakras; the visual structure of nodes and paths echoes the Kabbalistic Tree of Life; the activations are read from astrological planetary positions. In a single channel — two I Ching gates joining two chakra-derived centres on a Kabbalah-shaped diagram, triggered by an astrological reading — you can watch four ancient systems being braided together.
Seeing this is part of holding the system honestly. Human Design is an inventive recombination of older esoteric traditions, not a discovery about the body verified by science, and the gates-and-channels layer makes that lineage visible. Held as a rich symbolic language for self-reflection, it is fascinating; mistaken for a measured mechanism, it overclaims. For how the astrological thread compares, read human design vs astrology.
