What Gardner Was Arguing Against

The Scientific Criticism
The multiple intelligences framework has been extensively critiqued by cognitive psychologists and psychometricians:
The g factor evidence. Decades of psychometric research find that cognitive ability tests, despite measuring very different things (vocabulary, spatial rotation, working memory, numerical reasoning), are positively correlated, people who do well on one tend to do somewhat better on others. This positive manifold is the empirical basis for the g factor, and it's robust. Gardner's framework predicts more independence between the intelligences than the data show.
The criteria for "intelligence." Gardner's criteria for designating something an intelligence, including a neural substrate, potential for isolated impairment, a developmental trajectory, and others, are not universally accepted as sufficient. Critics argue that by these criteria, many human capacities (cooking, chess, humour) would qualify as intelligences. The framework risks losing discriminant validity.
Lack of validation through assessment. Gardner has resisted developing standardised tests for his intelligences, which makes empirical validation of the framework difficult. The primary evidence comes from observations, case studies, and correlations with other measures, not from the kind of systematic psychometric validation that IQ research rests on.
What the Theory Gets Right
Despite these criticisms, the theory captures something genuinely important. People do have meaningfully different cognitive profiles, relative strengths and weaknesses across different types of reasoning, expression, and performance. These differences matter educationally and vocationally. A student who struggles with verbal and mathematical tasks but demonstrates extraordinary spatial reasoning or musical ability is genuinely cognitively capable in ways that narrow IQ measurement misses. Educational environments that provide multiple entry points and recognise diverse forms of achievement produce better outcomes for more students than environments that recognise only the narrowly academic.
The intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences, in particular, influenced later work on emotional intelligence (Goleman's popularisation built partly on Gardner's interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences). Whether these are properly called intelligences or are better described as personality traits and skills is a definitional question, but the phenomena Gardner identified are real and important.
