The Relationship: Verbal Reasoning as Foundation
Verbal reasoning and critical thinking are often conflated, but they are distinct capabilities that work in concert. Verbal reasoning is the ability to identify and manipulate the logical structure of language, to recognize arguments, trace premises to conclusions, and follow chains of inference. Critical thinking, as defined by Ennis (1987), is "reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe or do." Critical thinking requires verbal reasoning as a foundation but extends far beyond it.
The distinction is crucial. A person can be verbally fluent, able to parse complex sentences, extract unstated assumptions, and follow intricate logical paths, without thinking critically. They might recognize that an argument is logically valid while failing to ask whether the premises are true, whether they harbor hidden biases, or whether sources are credible. Verbal reasoning is a tool; critical thinking is the judgment about how and when to use that tool wisely. Critical thinking adds evaluation, evidence assessment, source credibility judgment, and conscious attention to the values and biases that shape interpretation.
What Verbal Reasoning Contributes to Critical Thinking
Verbal reasoning provides the machinery that critical thinking requires. Without strong verbal reasoning capacity, critical thinking remains vague and vulnerable to emotional reasoning masquerading as logical analysis.
First, verbal reasoning enables argument structure recognition. It allows you to map where a claim comes from, what premises support it, what assumptions underlie it, what would need to be true for the conclusion to follow. Glaser's 1941 foundational work on critical thinking emphasized that the first step in critical evaluation is understanding the structure of what you are evaluating. You cannot critically examine an argument you cannot parse.
Second, verbal reasoning enables premise-to-conclusion tracking. It lets you follow whether conclusions actually follow from premises, or whether the speaker has made an inferential leap. This is distinct from determining whether the premises are true; it is determining whether the logical pathway is sound. Many flawed arguments are not flawed because their premises are false, but because they commit formal fallacies, affirming the consequent, false dilemmas, begging the question. Verbal reasoning detects these structural flaws.
Third, verbal reasoning enables inference detection. Skilled verbal reasoners notice unstated assumptions, the premises buried so deeply in common sense that speakers forget they are making them. When a speaker says "immigrants take jobs from citizens," they are making an inference based on an unstated assumption about how labor markets function. Verbal reasoning surfaces that assumption. Critical thinking then evaluates whether the assumption is warranted.
What Critical Thinking Adds Beyond Verbal Reasoning
Where verbal reasoning asks "Is this logically consistent?" critical thinking asks "Is this true? Is this wise? Am I believing this because the evidence supports it or because I want to believe it?"
Critical thinking adds evidence evaluation. A logically valid argument supported by anecdotes and assertion is not equivalent to a logically valid argument supported by systematic research. Stanovich's 2009 work on rational thinking demonstrates that many people with strong verbal reasoning fail at critical thinking because they do not distinguish between evidence types. They accept testimony, correlation, and emotional appeals as equivalent to controlled studies. Critical thinking requires knowledge of evidence hierarchy: experimental evidence typically outweighs correlational evidence; primary sources outweigh summaries; evidence from large, representative samples outweighs convenience samples.
Critical thinking adds source credibility assessment. Verbal reasoning can tell you whether a source's argument is internally consistent. But it cannot tell you whether a source is honest, whether they have expertise in the domain they're claiming authority in, or whether they have financial or ideological incentives to mislead. The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (1980) includes explicit sections on evaluating sources, assessing author credentials, publication context, funding, and potential conflicts of interest. A pharmaceutical executive arguing that their product is safe may construct a logically airtight argument while omitting inconvenient study results.
Critical thinking adds recognition of rhetorical manipulation. Much persuasive communication is designed to bypass rational evaluation entirely, using emotional appeals, social proof, scarcity, and aesthetic manipulation to shape belief without passing through critical scrutiny. Verbal reasoning alone does not defend against these tactics because they often avoid making explicit claims that reasoning can evaluate. Critical thinking teaches you to notice when you are being made to feel rather than to think, and to pause that automatic response.
Critical thinking adds value clarification. Many disagreements that appear to be factual disagreements are actually disagreements about values. Two people can agree on every empirical fact about climate change and still disagree on climate policy because they weight economic liberty, environmental protection, and intergenerational responsibility differently. Critical thinking requires awareness of your own values and their role in shaping conclusions. Verbal reasoning alone can mask value disagreements by making them appear to be empirical ones.
The Educational Implication: Why Both Matter
This distinction has direct implications for education. Schools that teach critical thinking without teaching verbal reasoning produce graduates with strong opinions but weak arguments. These students can articulate what they believe and why it matters to them, but they struggle with logical coherence, intellectual humility about the limits of their knowledge, and the ability to understand and charitably represent opposing views. Their critical thinking becomes ideology, confident and convictional but fragile under counterargument.
Conversely, schools that emphasize verbal reasoning, formal logic, argument analysis, linguistic precision, without teaching critical thinking produce graduates who are technically skilled at argumentation but prone to defending positions they have not genuinely examined. They can construct logically valid arguments for positions they do not actually believe. They can spot the logical flaw in an opponent's reasoning while accepting the opponent's foundational premises uncritically. Verbal reasoning without critical thinking is the art of making bad ideas sound good.
The most effective education combines both. It teaches verbal reasoning as the foundational skill, the ability to map arguments, detect inference patterns, and recognize logical structure. Then it layers critical thinking on top: the disciplined practice of questioning premises, evaluating evidence, assessing sources, recognizing manipulation, and clarifying values. The combination produces graduates who can both think clearly and think deeply about what is worth believing.
Daily Practices That Build Both
Developing verbal reasoning and critical thinking is not abstract study; it is practiced behavior. Specific daily practices build both capacities simultaneously:
- Reading opposing-view sources: Find credible sources that argue positions you disagree with. Read to understand their logical structure and premises, not to refute them. Notice what assumptions they make, what evidence they find compelling, what values they prioritize. This practice builds verbal reasoning (tracing arguments) and critical thinking (evidence assessment, value recognition) together.
- Formal logic study: Work through a logic textbook or course. Learn formal fallacies, argument forms, validity. This directly strengthens verbal reasoning and provides a vocabulary for critical evaluation. Even brief study, a few hours with a clear textbook, produces measurable improvement.
- Fallacy journaling: When you encounter an argument (in conversation, media, writing), note the fallacy type if one is present. Track whether the fallacy is formal (structural) or informal (content-based). Over time, pattern recognition becomes automatic. You begin noticing fallacies in real time rather than in retrospect.
- Structured debate: Participate in debate where you are assigned a position to argue, regardless of your actual belief. This forces verbal reasoning (constructing and defending arguments) and critical thinking (understanding opposing premises well enough to address them). The constraint of arguing what you do not believe paradoxically strengthens both capacities.
- Peer-review practice: Read someone else's written argument and provide structured feedback: What is the central claim? What evidence is provided? Are there logical gaps? Is the evidence reliable? What values or assumptions drive the conclusion? This builds critical thinking through application and verbal reasoning through close analysis of someone else's structure.
Careers Built on the Combination
Several high-stakes careers require both verbal reasoning and critical thinking as core competencies. The absence of either creates systematic failure modes.
Investigative journalism requires both. The journalist must be able to trace claims to sources, follow chains of evidence, and construct clear narratives (verbal reasoning). But they must also assess source credibility aggressively, recognize potential manipulation, and understand their own biases (critical thinking). A journalist with strong verbal reasoning but weak critical thinking publishes technically well-constructed stories built on weak evidence. A journalist with critical thinking instincts but poor verbal reasoning struggles to explain what they have discovered clearly.
Policy analysis operates on both dimensions. Analysts must understand complex systems, how educational policy affects employment, how tax policy affects investment, which requires tracing causal chains and logical connections (verbal reasoning). But they must also evaluate competing empirical claims from studies with different methodologies and understand that values about equity, efficiency, and liberty shape what policies different people support (critical thinking). Poor policy analysis confuses technical logical consistency with actual validity or wisdom.
Intelligence work relies heavily on both. Intelligence analysts construct narratives about what foreign actors intend and what events mean. Those narratives must be logically consistent (verbal reasoning) and grounded in reliable evidence while acknowledging uncertainty and avoiding motivated reasoning (critical thinking). History is dense with examples of intelligence failures that stem from either weakness: failures to notice logical inconsistencies in a prevailing narrative, or failures to question sources and assumptions critically.
Judicial roles demand both. Judges must understand the logical structure of legal arguments and statutory language (verbal reasoning) while evaluating the credibility of evidence, understanding how bias shapes perception, and being aware of their own reasoning processes (critical thinking). The best judges are not those who reason most elaborately but those who combine rigorous argumentation with constant self-scrutiny about whether they are being influenced by factors that should not matter.
Science and peer review operate on both. Scientists construct clear logical arguments about what their data mean (verbal reasoning), but the peer review process exists precisely because expert reasoning alone is insufficient. Reviewers must evaluate whether the methodology was sound, whether the evidence truly supports the conclusions, whether the authors have overlooked alternative explanations, and whether they have been influenced by paradigm biases (critical thinking). The strongest scientists combine mathematical and logical precision with critical self-doubt about whether their reasoning has been distorted by their own investment in their ideas.
Build both capacities together. Verbal reasoning without critical thinking produces slick argumentation divorced from truth. Critical thinking without verbal reasoning produces strong convictions but weak articulation. The combination produces the ability to think clearly, communicate persuasively, and remain genuinely open to being wrong.
