The critical cognitive skill is distinguishing what the passage states from what you infer or assume. Test-takers consistently fail by marking "True" on statements that seem reasonable based on real-world knowledge, even when the passage doesn't explicitly support them. The test is measuring textual comprehension, not world knowledge.

Answer: Cannot Say. The passage states that turnover decreased and a wage increase occurred, but three changes happened simultaneously. Which change (or which combination) caused the turnover drop? The passage provides no evidence isolating the wage increase's effect. Any of the three changes, or their combination, could have reduced turnover.
Example 3:
Passage: "All mammals are vertebrates. Whales are mammals. Therefore, whales are vertebrates."
Statement: "Whales possess a backbone."
Answer: True. The passage explicitly states that whales are mammals, and all mammals are vertebrates. Vertebrates, by definition, have vertebral columns (backbones). This follows directly from the stated premises.
Analogies Questions (Type 2)
Analogies measure relational reasoning, your ability to identify structural patterns and apply them to new cases. The format is A:B :: C:?, where you identify the relationship between A and B, then find the option that has the same relationship to C.
The key error is identifying the wrong relationship. Many pairs have multiple relationships (e.g., "dog" and "cat" are both animals, both have four legs, both are common pets). Successful test-takers identify the most specific or distinctive relationship, not just any relationship.

Answer: (a) Believer. The relationship is "person with a negative/doubtful outlook : person with a positive/trusting outlook." A pessimist expects bad outcomes; an optimist expects good ones. A skeptic doubts claims; a believer accepts them. Realist (b) is neutral, not opposite. Pragmatist (c) and Idealist (d) don't express the same opposition dynamic as pessimist/optimist and skeptic.
Statement-Conclusion Questions (Type 3)
Statement-Conclusion items present a series of premises and ask which conclusion follows logically. This is formal deductive reasoning: if the premises are true, does the conclusion necessarily follow?
The most common error is confusing "could be true" with "must be true." A conclusion that could logically follow is not the same as a conclusion that necessarily follows. Verbal reasoning tests require you to identify conclusions that are logically entailed by the premises, not merely consistent with them.

Option (b) overgeneralizes (we don't know about non-surgeon doctors). Option (c) is false, non-surgeons also complete residency. Option (d) doesn't follow from the premises.
Reading Comprehension Questions (Type 4)
Reading Comprehension items present a longer passage (200โ400 words) and ask inference, main idea, and detail questions. Unlike True/False/Cannot Say, which focus on a single short statement, Reading Comprehension requires you to synthesize information across the passage and draw supported inferences.

The passage explicitly states that strong cultures correlate with positive outcomes (lower turnover, higher engagement, sometimes higher profitability) but also notes risks (insularity, resistance to feedback). A "strong but permeable" culture is described as optimal. Option (a) overstates ("always"). Option (c) contradicts the passage directly. Option (d) is not supported.
Question 2: Based on the passage, why might a strong culture create difficulty recruiting diverse talent?
(a) Diverse candidates are less qualified than homogeneous candidates.
(b) Strong cultures limit diversity in hiring because they resist external perspectives and may operate according to homogeneous norms.
(c) The passage states this directly and provides a mechanism.
(d) Diverse talent is not interested in organizational culture.
Answer: (b). The passage states that strong cultures "can become resistant to external feedback" and describes the risk of homogeneous cultures. The inference is that candidates from outside groups perceive the culture as unwelcoming or exclusionary. The passage doesn't state option (a); option (d) contradicts the passage's concern with culture. Option (c) is oddly phrased but captures the mechanism: insularity deters diverse candidates.
How to Approach Each Question Type
Successful verbal reasoning requires a systematic approach for each type:
True/False/Cannot Say Strategy: Read the passage first, then the statement, then re-read the specific sentence in the passage that addresses the statement. Ask: "Does the passage explicitly state this?" If yes, mark True. If it explicitly contradicts it, mark False. If the passage doesn't address it (even if it's plausible in the real world), mark Cannot Say. Don't infer beyond what's written. Watch for absolute words ("all," "always," "never") in statements, a passage that says "most" does not support a statement saying "all."
Analogies Strategy: Write out the relationship between A and B in a sentence. For example: "Surgeon is to Scalpel as _____ is to _____." Reading Comprehension Strategy: Skim the passage for main idea and structure first, then read the question. Return to the passage and locate the relevant sentence(s). Look for the answer that is most directly supported by the passage, not the answer that's closest to the right idea. Watch for trap answers that are partially true but overstate or understate what the passage supports. For inference questions, the correct answer should follow from evidence in the passage, not from outside knowledge.
