Why People Confuse These Two Skills
Reading comprehension and verbal reasoning are frequently conflated, often because both require careful attention to text and both assess cognitive ability. But they measure fundamentally different operations. Comprehension asks: "What does this passage say?" Verbal reasoning asks: "What must be true given what this passage says?" The distinction is critical. A person can understand every word in a logical argument and still fail to recognize which conclusions follow necessarily from it. This confusion persists because standard education emphasizes comprehension, the ability to extract and retain information, while verbal reasoning, the ability to manipulate logical structures, is taught less systematically and tested less frequently in mainstream settings.
Reading Comprehension: What It Tests
Reading comprehension is the ability to extract meaning from text through a sequence of cognitive operations. The RAND Reading Study Group (2002), in their foundational review of reading comprehension research, identified three critical components: lexical access (retrieving word meanings), syntactic parsing (understanding sentence structure), and propositional integration (connecting ideas across sentences and paragraphs to build a coherent mental model of the text). A reader with strong comprehension skills can accurately answer questions about what the author explicitly stated, recall key facts, and explain the main ideas in their own words.
Comprehension tests typically ask direct questions: "What did the passage say about X?" or "Which of these facts was mentioned in the text?" The correct answer appears in the passage, sometimes verbatim, sometimes paraphrased. Success depends on attention, vocabulary, understanding of grammar, and the ability to construct a mental representation of the content. Comprehension breaks down when readers miss key words, misparse sentence structure, or fail to integrate information across multiple sentences. A student who reads carefully but slowly might score well on comprehension; a speed-reader who processes surface patterns might score poorly despite reading quickly.
Verbal Reasoning: What It Tests
Verbal reasoning is the ability to draw valid logical conclusions from textual premises. It tests deductive inference: given a set of statements, what must follow? The hallmark of verbal reasoning tests, particularly in legal reasoning, standardized hiring assessments, and academic evaluation, is the "Cannot Say" or "Cannot Determine" answer option. This option exists because verbal reasoning explicitly penalizes unjustified inference. A statement might be plausible, even likely true, but if it does not follow necessarily from the passage, the correct answer is "Cannot Say."
Verbal reasoning builds on comprehension but adds an additional layer. You must first understand what the passage states (comprehension), then evaluate the logical structure of that statement, and finally assess whether a proposed conclusion is entailed by it. Sternberg's componential theory of intelligence, which distinguishes between lower-order processes (encoding, mapping, comparison) and higher-order processes (justification, application, response selection), maps onto this distinction: comprehension relies heavily on lower-order encoding and mapping; verbal reasoning requires upper-order justification and careful logical application.
Concrete Example: Same Passage, Different Tasks
Consider this short passage:
"All senior software engineers at the firm must pass the security audit. Kim is a senior software engineer at the firm."
A comprehension question might ask: "What is one requirement for senior software engineers?" Correct answer: "They must pass the security audit." This requires recalling what the passage stated, comprehension only.
A verbal reasoning question

- B) Kim will be promoted next year (cannot determine, not mentioned)
- C) Kim must pass the security audit (follows necessarily from the two premises, this is the correct answer)
- D) All employees who pass the audit are senior engineers (reverses the logical direction, incorrect)
Both questions test understanding of the passage, but they demand different cognitive operations. The comprehension question rewards simple retrieval. The verbal reasoning question requires recognizing the logical structure (universal quantification: "all X must do Y; Z is an X; therefore Z must do Y"), distinguishing it from related-but-invalid structures (the converse, the inverse), and rejecting plausible but non-entailed statements.
When Each Skill Matters
Reading comprehension is essential in any role requiring information acquisition: academic study, professional communication, casual reading, and learning new domains. A physician reading a journal article, a project manager reviewing requirements documentation, a lawyer reviewing contracts for key terms, all rely on strong comprehension to extract accurate information.
Verbal reasoning becomes critical in roles where rigorous logical inference is the core work. Legal argument demands it: a lawyer must distinguish between what a statute says (comprehension) and what consequences follow logically from it (reasoning). Scientific peer review requires it: a reviewer must assess whether an author's data actually support their conclusion. Policy analysis requires it: does the proposed regulation logically achieve the stated objective, or is there a logical gap? In hiring, verbal reasoning tests filter for roles requiring sustained logical rigor, management consulting, law, scientific research, certain technical positions.
The asymmetry is important: every role benefits from strong comprehension, but not every role requires strong verbal reasoning. A skilled carpenter, an excellent nurse, a talented artist, all may have excellent comprehension but adequate (not exceptional) verbal reasoning, and they perform excellently in their fields. The reverse is rarer: high verbal reasoning without comprehension is nearly useless, since reasoning can only operate on what you correctly understand.
Building Both Skills (And the Asymmetry)
Comprehension is foundational. It improves through sustained, attentive reading across varied topics, explicit vocabulary building, and practice parsing complex sentences. Techniques like annotation, summarization, and re-reading for structure all strengthen comprehension. Most readers can improve comprehension substantially with focused effort.
Verbal reasoning builds on comprehension but develops through different practice. It requires explicit exposure to logical structures, practice identifying valid versus invalid inferences, and feedback on reasoning errors. This is less intuitive than comprehension training. Someone with excellent comprehension may still struggle with verbal reasoning because they have never formally learned logical structures, the validity rules that distinguish a sound deduction from a plausible-but-invalid guess. Reading more will not necessarily improve verbal reasoning; what improves it is explicit logical training.
This asymmetry explains why non-academic readers often have strong comprehension (through years of functional reading) but weaker verbal reasoning (never formally trained in logical structure). It also explains why verbal reasoning is a valuable hiring filter: it tests a specific cognitive skill less commonly developed outside academic and professional-training contexts.
To assess your own verbal reasoning, take the verbal reasoning test and compare your results to your reading comprehension in other contexts. Most people discover they are stronger at one than the other, and that difference matters in how you approach argument, writing, and decision-making.
