Weton is the cornerstone of Primbon Jawa, the traditional Javanese system of day-based divination. It's built from two calendars running side by side.
Two Calendars, One Pairing
The first calendar is the familiar 7-day week: Senin, Selasa, Rabu, Kamis, Jumat, Sabtu, Minggu. The second is the Pasaran, an indigenous 5-day Javanese market week: Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon.
Every date carries both a weekday and a Pasaran day at once. The specific pairing, say Rabu Kliwon or Sabtu Pahing, is your weton.
- 7-day week โ Senin, Selasa, Rabu, Kamis, Jumat, Sabtu, Minggu
- 5-day Pasaran โ Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon
- Full cycle โ 35 unique pairings, repeating once every 35 days
Because 7 and 5 share no common factor, the two cycles only realign once every 35 days โ every possible weton only recurs on that same rhythm.
Why Javanese Families Still Check Their Weton
Cek weton, literally "checking weton," is still a routine first step in Javanese life. It comes up before naming a baby, setting a wedding date, or opening a business.
Families compare combined neptu numbers and Pancawara temperaments as one traditional input alongside the practical planning that goes into any major decision. It isn't a binding rule so much as an established layer of cultural due diligence.
The Two Layers Every Weton Carries
A weton reading works on two levels:
- Neptu (the numeric layer) โ every weekday and Pasaran day has an assigned value; the two add together into a combined score historically used for timing decisions and matchmaking calculations.
- Pancawara (the personality layer) โ the traditional temperament tied to your Pasaran day, five distinct dispositions from optimistic and goal-chasing to patient and quietly diligent.
Together, these two layers give each of the 35 wetons its own distinct character.
How JobCannon's Quiz Uses the System
JobCannon's Weton Jawa Primbon quiz takes that same 35-archetype structure and matches it to how you actually think, decide, and relate โ not to your literal birth date.
You answer a set of short personality questions and land on one of the 35 day-and-pasaran archetypes, built on your Pancawara core temperament with a lighter flavor layered on top from the weekday half.
A fun, culturally grounded lens on your character, not a birth-date calculator โ it works whether or not you know your traditional weton already.
