WPATH SOC8 is the internationally recognized clinical framework for gender-affirming care. Here is what it actually covers, in plain language, and why it matters if you're looking for a provider.
What WPATH Is
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is an international, multidisciplinary professional association. Its Standards of Care are the most widely referenced clinical framework for gender-affirming health services worldwide.
What "Version 8" Means
SOC8, published in 2022, is the eighth major revision of the Standards of Care. It was developed by international, multidisciplinary expert working groups covering adolescent care, surgery, primary care, mental health, and more.
No Fixed Sequence
A common misconception is that WPATH prescribes a rigid order of steps. It doesn't. SOC8 explicitly frames care as individualized: some people pursue extensive exploration and no medical steps at all; others move toward hormone therapy or surgery relatively quickly once they have clarity about what they need.
The standards describe a flexible, person-centered process — not a checklist everyone has to complete in the same order.
What It Covers
- Mental health support and assessment
- Hormone therapy guidelines
- Surgical care across a range of procedures
- Primary and adolescent care considerations
- Guidance for family members and support systems
Finding a WPATH-Aligned Provider
WPATH maintains a public "Find a Provider" directory at wpath.org, listing clinicians and mental-health professionals who follow the organization's standards. It's a reasonable first stop whether you're just starting to explore or ready to take a concrete next step.
