The Senior High School (SHS) STEM strand is one of four Academic-track strands in the Philippine K-12 system, alongside ABM (Accountancy, Business, Management), HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences), and GAS (General Academic Strand). STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Established under the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10533), K-12 added two SHS years (Grades 11 and 12) to the previous 10-year basic education cycle. STEM strand students take subjects in pre-calculus, basic calculus, general biology, general chemistry, general physics, and earth science alongside core SHS subjects.
STEM is designed to prepare graduates for CHED-recognised tertiary programmes in science and engineering fields, though graduates can also pursue careers requiring TESDA technical-vocational certifications or direct employment.
STEM strand graduates typically pursue undergraduate degrees in engineering, nursing, computer science, medicine (via pre-med), architecture, pharmacy, marine engineering, and applied mathematics. The STEM strand prepares you for CHED-recognised tertiary programmes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
STEM strand graduates often pursue licensed professions (engineer, nurse, architect) with structured career ladders. ABM strand opens accounting, finance, and management roles. TVL strand provides direct employment after SHS via TESDA-recognised certifications. The "best" track depends on whether you want a 4-year degree path or shorter route to work.
Track shifting between Grade 11 and Grade 12 is school-dependent and generally discouraged because Grade 12 courses build on Grade 11 prerequisites within the same strand. If you are still in Grade 10 or early Grade 11, talk to your guidance counsellor about strand alignment before committing.
SHS by design certifies you for entry-level employment. STEM strand graduates can pursue TESDA technical-vocational certifications (e.g., electronics servicing, computer programming NC IV), apprenticeships, or direct employment in adjacent industries.
