Career
The pattern of a person’s work across a significant part of their life — an occupation chosen for its fit, usually built through education, training and experience that accumulate.
A career is the longest-range of the four terms and the only one defined partly by hindsight: it is the through-line you can see across a sequence of jobs. It normally involves growth — more responsibility, deeper skill, better pay — rather than repetition.
Careers are chosen on preference in a way jobs usually are not. That is why interest and values assessment belongs at the career layer: an interest inventory is a poor predictor of which employer you will like, and a much better predictor of which kind of work you will still want to be doing in ten years.
Careers are also not permanent. Most people change career at least once, and the change is normally into an adjacent field that reuses skills already built rather than a jump to the opposite side of the map.
