Employee Engagement
The degree of emotional investment and effort you put into work. More than just satisfaction — it's about being energized, committed, and motivated.
Employee engagement (Gallup, Kahn) measures: Are you emotionally connected to your work? Do you care about outcomes? Do you contribute discretionary effort beyond requirements?
Distinct from job satisfaction: you can be satisfied (fine with the job) but not engaged (not trying hard). Engagement is stronger than satisfaction as a predictor of performance, retention, and innovation.
Key drivers: psychological safety (you can be yourself), clear purpose (your work matters), autonomy (you have control), growth opportunities, and recognition.
Personality + engagement: high Conscientiousness + Extraversion = natural engagement (goal-driven and social collaboration). Low Conscientiousness + high Neuroticism = naturally disengaged (no drive, high anxiety).
