Fixed Mindset Beliefs
The belief that abilities are static and unchangeable. Leads to avoidance of challenges, giving up easily, and viewing effort as futile.
Fixed mindset (the opposite of growth mindset) treats traits as fixed: "I'm not a math person" (fixed), "I'm naturally an introvert" (partially fixed). This differs from acknowledging current ability ("I haven't learned calculus yet").
Fixed mindset consequences: avoiding challenging tasks (might reveal inability), giving up quickly (effort won't help anyway), ignoring feedback (criticism of my fixed self), and discounting others' success ("they're just naturally talented").
Importantly, personality traits ARE somewhat stable (heritability 40-60%), but they're far more changeable than the fixed mindset assumes. Research shows people can shift traits 0.5-1.0 standard deviations through therapy, medication, life experience, and intentional effort.
The balanced view: recognize your current strengths and limitations (realistic) while believing they're changeable through effort (growth mindset).
