Master Cloudflare Workers for request interception, origin proxying, API composition, and edge middleware to serve APIs and web apps with <30ms global latency.
Menene Cloudflare Workers Edge
Cloudflare Workers is a serverless computing platform that runs JavaScript/TypeScript at Cloudflare's 300+ global data centers (edges). Instead of routing requests to a centralized server (Lambda in one region = 100ms round trip), Workers intercept requests at the edge, respond instantly, and forward to origin servers when needed. How is Workers different from Lambda?
Lambda = regional (cold start 100–500ms, tied to AWS region). Workers = edge (30ms latency, deployed globally instantly). Trade-off: Lambda more feature-complete; Workers simpler, faster.
Cold starts?
Workers = no cold starts. Deploy once, runs on 300+ edges immediately. <1ms startup.
Pricing?
Free tier: 100k requests/day. Paid: $0.50/million requests. Cheap for high volume (vs Lambda $0.20 per 1M requests, but no regional tie-in).
Can I run database queries?
Yes, via D1 (SQLite), SQL Database, Postgres (via HTTP). Slightly slower than Lambda (remote query), but still <50ms total.
Job market?
~2k roles (US, growing). Edge computing adoption accelerating. Demand >> supply.
Startup choice?
If greenfield and global audience: Workers. If AWS ecosystem incumbent: Lambda. Hybrid: Both (Workers for CDN, Lambda for heavy compute).
Career ceiling?
Edge architect, staff engineer at Cloudflare = $200–280k+.
