Content strategy is the discipline of planning what content to create, when, on what channels, and how to measure whether it drives the business goal. It bridges editorial (which topics matter?) and distribution (where does the audience hang out?) and metrics (did it move the needle?). Core components: topic research (Ahrefs, SEMrush), content calendar (Notion, Airtable), distribution scheduling (Buffer, Hootsuite), and attribution (which content sources customers, drives signups, builds authority?). Distinct from content creation (writing/filming individual pieces), you can be a great writer and fail as a strategist if you don't prioritize topics or measure impact. In 2026, content strategy is ROI-accountable. "We publish 2 posts a week" is empty; "our pillar blog posts drive 30% of organic traffic, each piece gets 50+ backlinks, cost per reader is $0.03" is strategy. The best strategists think in content clusters: one 2000-word pillar post, 5-8 supporting pieces, all linking together, repurposed to video, email, social, slides, 8 weeks of compounding leverage from one core idea. SEO changed, Google now rewards topical authority (depth on one subject) over keyword stuffing. Strategic sites (HubSpot, Zapier, Ahrefs) own their verticals; random blog networks don't.
