PID controllers are feedback loops used in robotics, industrial machinery, HVAC, and vehicle control. You set a target (temperature 72°F, motor speed 1000 RPM) and the PID adjusts actuators to hit that target smoothly without oscillating. Tuning PID gains (P, I, D) is an art and science; mastery takes 8-10 weeks. Only 5% of engineers understand PID well enough to tune in production. Aerospace, automotive, and robotics companies pay 40-60% premium for PID experts because poorly-tuned controllers cost lives and millions in product recalls.

Cos'è PID Controller Tuning

A PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller is a feedback loop that adjusts an actuator to reach and maintain a target setpoint. Examples: a thermostat maintaining room temperature, a cruise control maintaining speed, a robot arm maintaining precise position, a drone's altitude controller. The controller measures the current state (sensor input), calculates the error (target - actual), and computes three correction terms:

What's the difference between P, I, and D in PID?
P (proportional) responds to current error immediately; too high = oscillation. I (integral) fixes steady-state error (always slightly off target); too high = slow response. D (derivative) dampens oscillation by reacting to rate of change. Tuning is balancing trade-offs: faster P = more overshoot. Higher I = less offset but slower settling.
How do I know if a PID is oscillating?
Look at the response curve: does it overshoot the target, then undershoot, bouncing back and forth? That's oscillation. Oscillation = PID is too aggressive (P too high, D too low). Dampen by lowering P or raising D.
What's Ziegler-Nichols and when do I use it?
Ziegler-Nichols is a classical tuning method: increase P until the system oscillates at the edge of stability. That's your critical gain. Then calculate P, I, D from the oscillation frequency. Good starting point; then hand-tune from there.
Can I use the same PID tune across different systems?
No. Every system (robot, oven, motor, aircraft) has different dynamics. A tune that works for a DC motor fails on a larger motor. You must re-tune per system and per operating point.
How do I debug a PID that's not responding?
Check: (1) Is the sensor reading correct? (2) Is the actuator moving in the right direction? (3) Is the error signal being calculated right? (4) Are your P/I/D values sane (not 0.0001 or 10000)? Start with a simple proportional (P only), verify it works, then add I and D.
