Why use Vault instead of AWS Secrets Manager or cloud-native secrets?

Vault is cloud-agnostic (works on AWS, GCP, Azure, on-premise). Cloud-native secrets are locked into one cloud. Vault is more powerful (PKI, dynamic secrets, policy engine). Trade-off: more complex than cloud-native.

What are dynamic secrets?

Traditional: admin creates secret, shares it forever. Dynamic: Vault generates temporary credentials for requested access, expires them. Example: Vault creates temporary AWS API key that works for 1 hour, then auto-revokes.

How do I integrate Vault with my applications?

Applications authenticate to Vault (AppRole, JWT), request secrets via API, use them, discard. SDKs for most languages simplify this.

Can Vault rotate secrets automatically?

Yes. Database secrets can be rotated automatically (Vault changes password on database, tells app new password). Application never knows the rotation happened.

Is Vault hard to set up?
