Lightstep is a distributed tracing platform for observability in microservices. Developers instrument services, Lightstep collects traces (request paths across services), identifies bottlenecks. Competitors: Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb. Mid-career DevOps engineers earn 10-20% premium mastering distributed tracing. Mastery takes 3-4 weeks. Demand steady as enterprises adopt microservices.

Lightstep Distributed څه شی دی

Lightstep is a distributed tracing platform for debugging microservices. When a user request flows through 5+ services, where does it slow down? Lightstep collects a "trace" (path of request through services), shows timing per service, highlights bottlenecks. Developers fix the slowest service and move on. Without tracing, debugging microservices is blind (logs are fragmented, no request timeline). With tracing, it's surgical (clear bottleneck, clear fix).

❓ ډېرې پوښتل شوې پوښتنې

How does Lightstep differ from Datadog?
Lightstep: specialized in distributed tracing, cheaper for tracing data. Datadog: all-in-one (metrics, logs, traces, synthetics), more complete. Small-scale: Lightstep. Enterprise: Datadog. Both use OpenTelemetry (compatible).
What's a span?
A unit of work in a request. Example: HTTP request A → Service 1 (spans: receive, process, call Service 2) → Service 2 (spans: receive, query DB, respond) → Service 1 (respond). Each span has timing, metadata. Trace = collection of spans.
Can I use Jaeger instead of Lightstep?
Jaeger is open-source, free. Lightstep is managed service (costs, but no ops). Jaeger: DIY (requires infrastructure). Lightstep: SaaS (pay, no ops). For learning, Jaeger is fine. Production: choose based on ops budget.
How do I instrument my application?
Use OpenTelemetry SDK (auto or manual). Auto-instrumentation: add agent (no code changes). Manual: import SDK, call `tracer.start_span()`. Most: auto-instrumentation (set and forget).
What latency overhead does tracing add?
Minimal (<5%) if sampled correctly. Don't trace 100% of traffic. Sample 1-10% depending on volume. Lightstep intelligently samples (important requests fully traced).
