Skill for implementing and optimizing HLS streaming infrastructure. Used by video engineers and platform architects. Salaries range $85k–$150k USD. Requires 2–3 months with video streaming and protocol fundamentals. Sits between basic streaming and advanced video delivery architectures.

Video Streaming HLS Protocol څه شی دی

HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is Apple's protocol for streaming video over standard HTTP connections. It segments video into small chunks (typically 4–10 seconds) and serves them as a series of HTTP requests. A playlist file (M3U8) instructs the player which segments to fetch in which order, allowing dynamic bitrate switching and resumable playback. HLS is ubiquitous: YouTube, Netflix, Apple TV, Twitch, and almost every streaming service use HLS. It works over standard HTTP infrastructure (CDNs, proxies, firewalls), making it the de facto standard for internet video delivery.

❓ ډېرې پوښتل شوې پوښتنې

What's HLS and how does it work?
HLS breaks video into small segments (2–10 seconds) and streams them via HTTP. A playlist file (M3U8) lists segment URLs. Clients download segments sequentially, adapting bitrate based on network speed. This enables adaptive streaming and works over any network.
What's the difference between HLS and DASH?
HLS is Apple's standard, ubiquitous on iOS. DASH is open-source, more flexible, better for DRM. Both serve the same purpose. Many platforms use both (HLS for Apple, DASH for others).
How do I set target duration for HLS segments?
Target 2–10 seconds per segment. Shorter segments = faster adaptation to network changes but more overhead. Longer segments = less overhead but slower adaptation. 4–6 seconds is typical for VOD; <2 seconds for live.
How do I implement adaptive bitrate (ABR) in HLS?
The player (HLS.js, JW Player) chooses bitrate based on bandwidth estimation. Servers provide multiple bitrate variants in the master playlist. Clients measure download speed and select appropriate bitrate.
What are common HLS issues and how do I fix them?
Buffering: segments take too long to download; increase CDN coverage or reduce segment count. Quality jumps: ABR algorithm is too aggressive; tune bandwidth estimation. Playback stalls: wrong segment durations or missing segments; validate playlist.
