Songwriting and Lyric Writing

Songwriting is the art of writing melodies, chord progressions, and song structures that move listeners. Lyric writing is crafting words that tell a story, rhyme, fit the melody naturally, and resonate emotionally. A great song combines a memorable hook, smart structure, and authentic expression. Songwriting is the craft of creating an original song: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and arrangement from scratch or in collaboration. A songwriter masters melodic shape and contour, understands how chord progressions create emotion (I–vi–IV–V feels nostalgic; I–IV–I feels folk-simple), and knows song structure conventions (verse builds information; chorus delivers the payoff; bridge offers perspective shift). Lyric writing is the art of the words: finding rhyme schemes that sound natural (not forced), writing lyrics that scan to the melody (prosody), telling a story or expressing emotion, and crafting a hook (a single line or phrase so catchy it echoes in the listener's mind). Together, melody and lyric must serve the song's intent: to move, inspire, entertain, or challenge.
