Arizona DoE Career Exploration / Introduction to Early CTE standard 5 · A curriculum standard is not a psychometric instrument. Our items run one per criterion against 5.1, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.6 for grades 6-8, so it crosswalks to district curriculum — no reliability or validity study, no norms.
Yes. You can work through all 30 situations and see your overall band without creating an account. The five separate skill scores and the explanation behind each situation are part of the same free result — nothing is held back behind a payment.
Each situation offers four responses and one is keyed as the best fit by consensus practice, not a provable answer the way a maths question has. Your choices are tallied into an overall band, from one setting for every room to adapts on purpose, and into five separate scores: interpersonal versus communication skills, audience and purpose, culture, generation and distance, the conventions of professional mediums, and telling verbal, nonverbal, written and visual communication apart.
They measure different things. The Communication Style test sorts how you behave when you disagree with someone — assertive, passive, aggressive or passive-aggressive — and says nothing about who you are writing to. This test holds the disagreement aside and asks whether you change the message for the reader: a classmate versus a principal, a text versus a cover letter, someone in the room versus someone three time zones away.
The situations are written at a middle-school reading level, so a student in grades 6 to 8 can read every one of them without help, and the settings are the ones that age actually meets: a group project, a message to a teacher, a first weekend job, a family member who uses a phone differently. Adults can take it too, and the four skills are the same at any age — the wording is simply plainer than a workplace questionnaire would be.
Taking our test should not be viewed as a comprehensive or precise evaluation of your abilities. Results are for informational and self-reflection purposes only.
Free communication adaptability test: 30 school and work situations scored on audience, purpose, culture, distance, communication methods and the rules of email, texts and resumes.
This communication adaptability test gives you 30 short situations — a group-project message to a classmate, an email to a teacher you have never met, a first message to a manager about a weekend shift — and asks which response fits the situation best. Your answers are scored on five separate skills: telling interpersonal skills apart from communication skills, changing a message for its audience and its purpose, noticing how culture, generation and physical distance change what a message means, using the conventions each medium expects across email, a formal letter, a resume, a text and a public social post, and telling verbal, nonverbal, written and visual communication apart when you see one described. Each situation has one response keyed as the best fit by consensus practice, and the scoring reads the pattern across all 30 items, because adapting is a habit rather than a single right answer.
This is not a personality test and not an English or grammar exam. It does not describe who you are, and it does not measure vocabulary, spelling or how well you write from a blank page — it measures whether you can tell which version of a message a particular reader needs. It is also not the same thing as the Communication Style test, which sorts how you behave during a disagreement into assertive, passive, aggressive or passive-aggressive; that test is about conflict, this one is about audience. It is a curriculum-aligned self-assessment written at a middle-school reading level, not a proctored exam, not a graded assignment, and not a credential to put on an application. A low score names a skill to practise, not something fixed about you.
You get an overall band, from one setting for every room through to adapts on purpose, plus five separate scores so you can see which part slips: spotting the difference between getting along with people and getting a message across, shifting register between a friend, a teacher and an employer, reading what culture, generation and distance do to the same sentence, knowing that a text and a cover letter are not written the same way, or telling verbal, nonverbal, written and visual communication apart. Every item you answer differently from the keyed response is explained afterwards in terms of the skill behind it, so the result reads as habits to work on rather than one number. It takes about 6 minutes, there is no timer, and you can see your result without creating an account. Retaking it after a term of practice is where it becomes most useful.
