Nine Star Ki (九星気学, kyusei kigaku) is a Japanese system of birth-date astrology that sorts everyone into one of nine "stars", numbered 1 to 9. Each star is paired with one of the five Chinese elements — Water, Earth, Wood, Metal or Fire — and with a fixed home direction on the Lo Shu magic square, the 3x3 grid of numbers that the whole system is built on. Your Main Star (also called the year star) is the headline reading: it describes your underlying temperament, how you behave in close relationships, the kind of work that suits you, and the compass direction traditionally considered favourable for you.

The one rule that surprises almost everyone is the year boundary. Nine Star Ki does not use 1 January. Its year begins at setsubun (節分), the seasonal turning point that falls on or about 4 February — so if you were born in January or in the first days of February, your Main Star is calculated from the PREVIOUS calendar year, not the year printed on your birth certificate. This single correction is why so many free calculators disagree with each other, and it is the most common reason someone is told the wrong star.
