Moon Sign Calculator
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date and place, add the time if you know it, and we compute it from astronomy data.
How the moon sign calculator works
Enter your birth date and place
The place sets your time zone, so the Moon is checked against your own calendar day.
Add your birth time if you have it
A time gives the exact degree. Without one we show every sign the Moon visited that day.
Read your moon sign
You get the sign, its degree, and how many minutes you sit from the nearest sign change.
What can change your answer
Birth time matters on about 45% of dates
The Moon changes sign every 2.3 days on average, and on about 45% of dates it switches during the day. On those dates the time decides, and without it we list both signs with the clock time of the switch.
Western tropical zodiac
Signs here follow the tropical zodiac used by most horoscope sites. A Vedic (sidereal) chart sits about 24 degrees earlier, so its moon sign often differs.
Old birth times
We convert your local time with the historical time-zone database, which records daylight saving and zone changes. A small-town certificate from before about 1970 can still disagree with it.
From one placement to your whole chart
Your Moon is one of three placements that shape a chart. The full birth chart adds your Sun and Rising sign, every planet, the 12 houses and the aspects between them.
The wheel and your Big Three are free. The written reading of each planet is the paid part.
Frequently asked questions
Enter your birth date and birthplace above, and add your birth time if you know it. We compute where the Moon was and report the zodiac sign it was in. If the Moon changed sign during your birth day and you have no time, we show both signs and when the switch happened.
Not always. The Moon stays in a sign for about 2.3 days, so on roughly 55% of dates one sign covers the whole day and the time does not matter. On the other 45% it does, and the calculator tells you which case you are in.
Your moon sign describes your emotional life: what comforts you, how you react under stress and what you need to feel safe. It is read next to your Sun sign, which is about identity, and your rising sign, which is about how you come across. The full birth chart puts all three side by side.
Usually one of two things. The other tool may use the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees earlier than the tropical zodiac used here. Or it may be working from a different time zone or time of day than your birth moment.
The Moon position comes from the same astronomy library as our full birth chart. We checked it against NASA JPL Horizons at nine dates between 1900 and 2099, and the largest gap was 0.022 degrees, under three minutes of the Moon’s travel. Dates run from 1900 to 2099.
