Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon when you were born. It needs three things: your birth date, your exact birth time and your birthplace.
How the rising sign calculator works
Enter your birth date and place
The place gives us your latitude and longitude, which decide where the horizon cuts the zodiac.
Enter your exact birth time
Use the time on your birth certificate. A rising sign lasts about two hours, so minutes matter.
Read your rising sign and the margin
You get the sign, its degree, and how many minutes you are from the nearest sign change.
What can change your answer
The exact minute counts
The rising sign changes about every two hours. In London a sign lasts from 52 minutes (Aries) to 170 minutes (Virgo), so we show how close your time is to the edge.
No birth time, no rising sign
The ascendant passes through all 12 signs every day, so without a time any sign is possible and we will not guess one. The moon and Venus calculators work without a time on most dates.
Far north and far south
Near and beyond the polar circles (66.5 degrees) the zodiac can lie almost flat along the horizon, so a sign can last only minutes. We flag those results as approximate.
From one placement to your whole chart
Your rising sign is the first step of the chart. The full birth chart adds your Sun and Moon sign, every planet, the 12 houses and the aspects between them.
The wheel and your Big Three are free. The written reading of each planet is the paid part.
Frequently asked questions
Enter your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace above. We work out which zodiac degree was rising on the eastern horizon at that moment, in that place, and give you its sign. The result also shows how many minutes you are from the nearest sign change.
No. The ascendant moves through all 12 signs in 24 hours, so without a time any sign could be yours. Check your birth certificate, hospital records or ask a parent. Your moon sign usually does not need a time.
Because each sign takes a limited time to cross the horizon: about 52 minutes to 170 minutes in London, and less at higher latitudes. If your result says you are close to a change, treat the neighbouring sign as possible too.
Your rising sign describes how you come across at first meeting and the style you bring to new situations. It is the starting point of the chart, so it also sets the 12 houses. The full birth chart shows it with your Sun and Moon.
The ascendant is computed from sidereal time and the tilt of the Earth’s axis for your exact place, in the same engine as our full birth chart. We checked it against NASA JPL Horizons by finding the moment the Sun crosses the horizon in four cities, and it agreed to within 0.01 degrees.
