Your Janma Nakshatra, or birth star, is one of the 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) that make up the Vedic zodiac — the specific stretch of sky the Moon was moving through at the moment you were born. In Jyotish (Vedic astrology) tradition, each Nakshatra carries its own personality archetype, symbol and ruling planet, offering a traditional lens on your natural temperament.
Your Western zodiac sign is based on the Sun's position and only needs your birth date. Your Vedic Moon sign (Rashi) narrows things to one of 12 signs based on the Moon. A Nakshatra goes a layer deeper — each of the 12 Moon signs is subdivided into Nakshatras, so it's a more granular reading of exactly where the Moon sat at your birth.
The Moon moves fast — it travels through roughly one Nakshatra every day (about 13°20' of the zodiac) and can cross from one lunar mansion into the next within hours. Two people born on the same date, even a few hours apart, can land in different Nakshatras. That's why we ask for your exact birth time, not just your birth date.
Get as close as you can — a birth certificate, hospital record, or a family member's memory is usually accurate enough, since the Moon typically stays in one Nakshatra for about a day. If your time is only approximate and happens to fall near the boundary between two Nakshatras, your result could be off; for a reading you can trust, it's worth tracking down the most precise time available.
