Big Five (OCEAN)

Conscientiousness

A Big Five personality trait measuring self-discipline, organization, goal-directed behavior, and reliability. High scorers are organized and dependable; low scorers are flexible and spontaneous.

Conscientiousness is the strongest Big Five predictor of job performance across virtually all occupations (Barrick & Mount, 1991). It encompasses organization, reliability, self-discipline, and the ability to delay gratification.

High Conscientiousness individuals plan ahead, follow through on commitments, meet deadlines, and maintain organized systems. They're the people who respond to emails promptly and keep their desk clean. Low Conscientiousness individuals are more spontaneous, flexible, and comfortable with ambiguity — but may struggle with deadlines and follow-through.

Research shows Conscientiousness correlates r=0.20-0.30 with job performance across all jobs, and even higher (r=0.30-0.40) in roles requiring reliability and attention to detail. Very low Conscientiousness (below 25th percentile) is also associated with ADHD traits.
