Big Five (OCEAN)

Openness to Experience

A Big Five personality trait measuring curiosity, imagination, aesthetic sensitivity, and willingness to try new things. High scorers are creative and open-minded; low scorers prefer routine and practicality.

Openness to Experience is one of the five broad dimensions in the Big Five (OCEAN) personality model. It captures the degree to which a person is intellectually curious, emotionally aware, sensitive to beauty, and willing to try new things.

People high in Openness tend to be imaginative, creative, and drawn to abstract ideas. They enjoy art, music, and novel experiences. They question conventional thinking and are comfortable with ambiguity. People low in Openness prefer familiar routines, concrete thinking, and practical approaches.

In career contexts, high Openness predicts success in creative fields (design, writing, art), research, entrepreneurship, and roles requiring innovation. Low Openness suits roles with clear procedures and established methods (accounting, administration, operations).
