Enneagram

A personality system describing nine core types based on fundamental motivations, fears, and desires. Each type has two "wings" (adjacent types), and growth/stress integration points.

The Enneagram is a personality framework that categorizes people into nine types, each driven by a core fear and desire. Unlike Big Five (traits) or MBTI (cognitive preferences), the Enneagram focuses on motivation — why you do what you do.

The nine types are: 1 (Reformer — integrity), 2 (Helper — love), 3 (Achiever — worth), 4 (Individualist — identity), 5 (Investigator — competence), 6 (Loyalist — security), 7 (Enthusiast — freedom), 8 (Challenger — control), 9 (Peacemaker — peace). Each type also has two "wings" — adjacent types that flavor expression.

The Enneagram is particularly valued for personal growth and relationship understanding. While it has less empirical research than the Big Five, validated instruments (like the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator) show acceptable reliability. It's widely used in therapy, spiritual direction, and team development.
