How does Lightning Network work?
Two parties open payment channel (on-chain transaction). Exchange payments off-chain (instant, free). When done, close channel (settle on-chain). Off-chain = no block confirmation delays. State = cryptographically signed, trustless.
What's a payment channel?
A 2-party smart contract. Both deposit funds. They exchange signed messages changing balance. Updates are instant (off-chain). Only open/close require on-chain transaction. Hundreds of channels form a network (routing).
How do I route payments through the network?
Send payment to someone you don't have direct channel with. Network finds path (Alice → Bob → Carol → You). Each hop forwards payment. Sender doesn't know the full path (privacy). Routing fees are small (< 1%).
What's the difference between LND and Core Lightning?
LND: Lightning Labs' implementation, widely adopted, well-documented. Core Lightning (formerly c-lightning): Blockstream's implementation, lighter footprint, different API. Both are compatible (same protocol). Choose based on use case.
Can I run Lightning on my own node?
