MES Manufacturing Execution

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are software platforms that sit on the shop floor, collecting real-time data from machines, operators, and quality systems. They track work-in-progress, schedule jobs, manage labor allocation, and enforce quality checks. An MES shows production managers exactly what is happening right now—which machines are running, which orders are on schedule, which ones are delayed, and why. Data flows bidirectionally: ERP sends work orders down to MES, and MES sends actual production data back up to ERP for inventory and accounting. Think of MES as the nervous system connecting the brain (ERP) to the body (machines and operators). Without MES, a plant manager gets production data at the end of the day via spreadsheets. With MES, they see it in real-time dashboards and can react within minutes.
