What is Music Theory and Composition

Music theory is the systematic language of musical structure: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and orchestration. Composition is the art and craft of writing original music, using theory as the foundation. Together they enable you to analyze great works, write convincingly in any style, and communicate musical ideas clearly to performers and listeners. Music theory is the framework for understanding how music works: how intervals and chords relate, how melodies and harmonies interact, how keys and modulation build narrative tension, and how large-scale form (sonata, rondo, theme and variations) organizes a piece. Composition is the creative application of theory—writing a melody, harmonizing it, developing it through modulation and variation, orchestrating it for instruments, and shaping it into a coherent, expressive work. A composer might write a pop song (simple form, catchy melody, modern harmony), a symphony (complex sonata form, classical key relations), a film score (functional music that serves dramatic intent), or a game soundtrack (looping, responsive to player state).

â–¶What is the difference between functional harmony and chromatic harmony?
Functional harmony (tonal harmony) is the system where chords relate to a home key: I is the tonic, IV the subdominant, V the dominant. Chord progressions follow predictable voice-leading rules and create tension (V) and resolution (I). Chromatic harmony uses extra chords (chromatic mediants, secondary dominants, augmented sixths) to add color and ambiguity. Functional harmony is the foundation; chromatic and extended harmony build on top of it. Learning function first (Bach chorales, classical sonatas) then chromatic (Romantic composers) is the standard path.
â–¶How do I develop a personal compositional voice?
Compose constantly: write short pieces weekly, not annually. Study scores obsessively—analyze what makes melodies memorable, how harmony supports emotion, how orchestration shapes color. Listen to music in genres you don't normally play; borrow and blend techniques from unexpected places. Collaborate with performers and get feedback. Your voice emerges not from trying to sound unique but from consistent practice, deep listening, and honest emotional expression. Most young composers sound like their heroes at first; that is normal and okay.

Voice leading is the smooth movement of individual melodic lines (voices) in counterpoint or harmony. Good voice leading keeps each line singable, minimizes large leaps, avoids parallel fifths and octaves (in classical style), and creates independence between voices. Poor voice leading sounds clunky and awkward. Voice leading is the difference between amateur and professional-sounding harmony. Study Bach chorales and string quartets to see masterful voice leading in action.
â–¶How do I write for live instruments if I primarily compose on a DAW?
DAW mockups are faster but often hide arranging mistakes because samples hide awkward ranges and voicings. Write directly on paper (notation software) and think like an orchestrator: know the comfortable range, playability, and tone color of each instrument. Have live players read your scores before a premiere if possible. Study published orchestral scores for reference on doublings, balance, and typical ranges. The more you play instruments yourself, the more naturally you will write for them.
â–¶What is the difference between diatonic and modulation?
Diatonic means staying within a single key signature (all chords and notes from that key). Modulation is a planned shift to a new key, typically to V (up a fifth) or IV (up a fourth) to add harmonic interest and drive toward a climax. A smooth modulation uses a pivot chord that belongs to both keys. Abrupt modulation (a sudden key change without transition) is a modern technique for shock or surprise. Classical composers used modulation strategically; modern pop and film music often skip traditional modulation for energy and drama.
â–¶Do I need to learn orchestration if I compose in a DAW?
Yes. Film composers, game composers, and any composer who works with real ensembles or mock-ups must understand orchestration—instrument ranges, doublings, balance, articulation, and style conventions. A synth pad that sounds full in a DAW often turns thin with real strings because a real orchestra has frequency gaps you must fill with doublings and layering. Study Rimsky-Korsakov, Adler, and examine scores from your favorite films to understand how orchestration creates power and color.
â–¶How do I land a job as a film or game composer?
Build a portfolio: compose 3–5 short (2–4 minute) pieces across genres (action cue, emotional scene, exploration music). Upload to SoundCloud or YouTube with professional links. Network with indie game developers and student filmmakers, often through Reddit, Game Jams, or local film schools. Submit to contests and festivals to build credentials. Formal credentials (Berklee degree, conservatory training) help, but portfolio and networking matter more. Many working composers started with passion projects and built from there.
