Programmatic Advertising with Real-Time Bidding (RTB) is the automated, algorithmic buying and selling of digital ad impressions through real-time auctions. When a user visits a webpage, an ad exchange sends a bid request to multiple DSPs (Demand-Side Platforms) in <100ms. Each DSP evaluates the opportunity (user, context, placement) and submits a bid price. The highest bidder's ad is served. The entire system relies on machine learning (predicting which impressions are valuable), distributed systems (handling millions of auctions per second), and protocol standards (OpenRTB).
