Smooth Streaming (DASH—Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is a protocol for delivering video content over HTTP by breaking content into short segments at multiple bitrates. Players automatically select the highest quality bitrate that can be delivered without buffering, providing a seamless viewing experience across varying network conditions. DASH includes manifest generation (MPD files), segment optimization, quality ladder design, and player implementation. It's the foundation of video streaming at scale and is used by virtually every major streaming platform.
