Words per minute is a prose measure — it assumes a five-character average word and continuous text. Data entry is short fields, numbers, codes and tabbing between them, where there is no such thing as an average word. Raw speed is multiplied by the share of fields you got exactly right, so typing at double the pace with half the fields wrong produces the same number as typing at normal pace with everything correct. There are three rounds, and each one uses a different kind of record, because a name and a city behave nothing like a tracking code and a weight.
A field scores only when it matches the source exactly. Nothing is close enough: a transposed digit in an account number is a wrong account number, and a test that gave partial credit for it would tell an employer the opposite of what the job needs. Your speed is then multiplied by that accuracy, so the final figure is what you can actually produce, not what you can produce if nobody checks it.
