Deductive Reasoning Test

Which of five bands you land in, from Early Steps in Deduction up to Near-Flawless Deduction. Syllogisms, conditional reasoning, ordering and ranking, and conclusions from statements, each scored on its own. Whether you lose marks by reversing an if-then rule, by reading some as all, or by picking an answer that could be true instead of one that must be.

🔬 Research & Sources

Deduction errors are predictable. Most people handle a plain if-then rule comfortably and then read it backwards the moment the question gets longer, or let what they believe about the world override what the statements say. The 25 questions are grouped into the four families where those slips cluster, so a low score points at a habit you can change rather than at general slowness. The questions are original to JobCannon and have no published norms, so this is a practice reading, not an IQ score and not the supervised aptitude test an employer would give.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if a statement in the test sounds false in real life?

Treat every statement as true for the length of the question, however odd it sounds. Deductive reasoning asks what must follow from the given statements, not whether the statements match the world, so a question can say that all rivers are made of tea and still have exactly one certain answer. Bringing in outside knowledge is the most common way to lose a point on the JobCannon Deductive Reasoning Test.

How is my score calculated?

Each of the 25 questions has exactly one option that must be true, stored as the exact wording of that option rather than its position in the list, and a correct pick earns the question's point. A wrong answer scores zero and nothing is taken off, so it never costs you to answer. Your result shows the number right, a percentage, one of five descriptive bands and a score for each of the four question types. It does not compare you with other people, because there is no norm group for this test.

Is this the same test an employer would give me?

No. Employers use their own timed tests, scored against their own comparison groups, and JobCannon cannot see or reproduce those. The 25 questions here are original to JobCannon and have no published norms or validity study, so the result is a practice reading of how carefully you reason from stated information. It is useful for learning the question styles and your weak spots, not for predicting a pass mark.

Why is an option that could be true scored wrong?

Because deductive reasoning only credits what is forced. An option can fit the statements and still be wrong when a different arrangement of the same facts would also fit them. The right answer is the one that holds in every arrangement. A useful check is to try to build one situation where all the statements are true and the option is false: if you can, the option does not follow.

How can I get better at deductive reasoning questions?

Work from the statements, not from your first impression. For if-then rules, write the rule down and ask whether you are given the condition or only the result, since only the first lets you conclude anything. For all, some and none statements, sketch overlapping circles. For ordering questions, draw a line and place each clue as you read it. Practising these habits matters more than speed.
