Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Egogram (エゴグラム)?
An Egogram is a personality profile based on John Dusay's Transactional Analysis model. It measures how your psychic energy is distributed across five ego states: Critical Parent (CP), Nurturing Parent (NP), Adult (A), Free Child (FC), and Adapted Child (AC). The resulting bar chart — the egogram — shows which states dominate your everyday behaviour and where you have room to develop.
What are the five ego states?
Critical Parent (CP) holds your values, standards, and critical judgement. Nurturing Parent (NP) carries your care, warmth, and protective instincts. Adult (A) is your rational, data-driven, problem-solving mode. Free Child (FC) holds your spontaneity, creativity, and joy. Adapted Child (AC) reflects how you learned to adjust your behaviour to meet others' expectations. A healthy egogram uses all five states flexibly depending on what the situation needs.
How is the Egogram scored?
You answer 20 statements — four for each ego state — on a five-point scale from Never to Always. Your scores are summed per state and displayed as a bar chart. The dominant state (highest bar) indicates the ego-state that leads most of your interactions.
Who created the Egogram?
The egogram concept was developed by John M. Dusay in 1972 as an extension of Eric Berne's Transactional Analysis theory. Dusay introduced it as a visual tool for clients in therapy to see how their ego-state energy was distributed and where a shift might bring more balance.
Is the Egogram a scientific personality test?
Transactional Analysis is a recognised framework in psychotherapy and counselling, and the egogram has been used clinically since the 1970s. This implementation is a self-assessment tool for reflection and self-awareness, not a diagnostic instrument — results should be used as a starting point for exploration rather than a clinical conclusion.
